Sing it with me now, “Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our heart….”

Salute Your Shorts was a ’90s Nickelodeon show set at the fictional Camp Anawanna. I can’t remember if I watched the show when it was originally aired or when it was in re-runs but either way it was on Nickelodeon while I was a camper at Delanco Camp and always did an excellent job of keeping me in the camp spirit throughout the school year.

The show, which lasted only two seasons, was based on the 1986 book of the same name. It focused on a group of teenage campers, their annoying counselor and the various issues that arise during their time at Anawanna. Among the show’s characters was one of the more unforgettable nicknames in the history of television – Donkeylips.

The show’s name comes from a popular prank where boy campers steal a pair of boxer shorts from another camper and run them up the flag pole, replacing the American flag for the morning flag salute. I’ve not heard tell of this particular prank happening at camp, but there was something other than a flag flying on our flag pole at one point during Teen 2 this summer.

Have you seen the show? What do you remember most about it?

  1. speaking of saluting your shorts, someone’s shorts were strung up the flag pole and then remained there for a good week or two. there’s also a picture somewhere on the camp’s computer of it.

  2. I love(d) this show. Like most shows about being a teenager it gave me false ideas about what it would be like to be older [Saved By The Bell]. I remember many things about this show: the cast of stereotypical kids, Ug Lee, that giraffe’s tongues are black and the “scary” episode with the plumber. Also the show it usually led into, Hey Dude!

  3. I loved how there were random announcements made on the loud speaker, which reminded me of the movie MASH.

When I’m making announcements over the loud speaker at camp, I often use names of other real and fictional camps to confuse the campers, and Camp Anawanna is one that I usually use.

  4. LOVED this show and LOVE even more that Dan brought up Hey Dude!

Always thought there could be a tv show like Salute your shorts based on we week at Delanco Camp. Thanks for the childhood memories!
