Camp has never had a big budget to bring in big name guest speakers, but one year at Memorial Day Weekend Camp the speaker was someone still remembered for his famous game-winning slide in the 1992 NLCS.
His name is Sid Bream and anyone who watched baseball in the ’90s will remember him well since he played in three straight postseasons with the Atlanta Braves from 1991 to 1993. His run-scoring slide sent the Braves to the World Series in 1992, where they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Having Sid Bream speak at camp didn’t create the buzz say a former Philadelphia Phillies player would have created, but as a baseball nut who used to have my parents mail me box scores while I was away at camp, I was pretty excited about it. Here was a guy whose baseball cards I owned speaking from the pulpit in the Tabernacle.
All those times I rooted for him to strike out, he was a fellow brother in Christ. I felt a little guilty about it when he came to camp. I don’t remember too much about what he spoke about that weekend and I can’t place the year (he retired in 1994 so perhaps late ’90s?) but just getting to meet a former professional baseball player who loved Jesus was an inspiration for me in my walk with Christ.
There are so many other speakers I’ve heard at camp over the years – people like Chris Stratton, Ricky Court, Darryl Duer, Victor Hamilton, Roy Lauter, Wilbert “Hoppy” Hoffman and so many more – and each has played a part in my spiritual growth and development in the almost 25 years since I first came to camp.
